On October 28th we held the second installment of Founders Friday and of course, there was no holding back on the Halloween decorations. A huge thanks to Beth for the tremendous effort sticking over 50 individual spiders to walk with blu-tack. True dedication to the cause.
To introduce the evening, Owen @goinventme swiftly talked us through his ‘Top 5 tips on how to be a hauntingly “good” tech founder’, including learning how to become an ‘out of office assassin’ and ‘pivoting more than a figure skater’.
We then rolled onto the quickfire talks, starting with Jake from Hello My Name Is @hello_MNI. Jake ran us through his story securing a role in the video-cv startup after working as a bartender for several years in Leeds. A bit of a career change to say the least! Kimberley @freedbydesign followed this with a 4 step guide to user centered design. Some key takeaways from her slides included ‘get out of the building’ and ‘you are not your users’. Kimberley is currently the Head of CX at Cocoon and organises NUX Leeds.
Martin from Nobilis @martin_nyaga then talked us through his vast struggles and failures whilst setting up a software development agency based in Kenya. You could just tell how passionate Martin is about his entrepreneurial journey and you can find out more information on his blog martinnyaga.com. Gwen @gwendiagram then captivated the audience by comparing the agile scene in Great Britain with Australia. Turns out they also have a very different stance on clothing policies in burger stores… We’ll save that story for a rainy (British) day.
To wrap things up, Tim Brazier @leedsdigidrinks talked us through the recent antics of the Leeds Digital Drinks crew, including a visit to Northern Monk Brew Co, The Great Escape Games and #DigitOwl being escorted out of new John Lewis. Once we had finished the remaining beer supply we shot across to Headrow House to end the night in the beer hall.
Join us on Friday the 25th of November for the next Founders Friday. Sign up now!
